I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself to anyone who I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting. My name is Melissa Smith and I will be your child’s homeroom, literacy, and Social Studies teacher for the 2017-18 school year! I will be entering my 8th year of teaching and my 5th year at Julia A. Stark Elementary School. I LOVE teaching (every day is a new adventure) & my favorite part is learning from my students every year! I am looking forward to a year filled with lots of hard work, new discoveries, plus tons of fun and learning.
As the school year comes closer, I would like you to be aware of a few things that will help make your child’s year get off to a great start.
First Day of School – Please make sure to include a note with your child stating how they will get home the first day of school, whether by bus to an after school program, bus home or parent pick up to ensure a smooth ending to the 1st day.
Start of the Day – The school day begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. Your child is invited to enter the classroom beginning at 8:45 a.m. It is vital to your child’s success that he/she enters as close to 8:45 a.m. as possible so that he/she can prepare for the day. Morning meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. and I would be disappointed if anyone missed that time when we sit and greet each other and map out our day.
Specials – A prepared child is a successful child! Please be sure your child wears sneakers on Gym days. Our Schedule:
Monday & Wednesday: Gym with Mrs. Batton
Tuesday: Art with Mr. Greco
Thursday: Media with Ms. Hirtenstein
Friday: Music with Mr. Knight
Snack – With lunch being so late this year, at 12:55, we will have a morning snack every day around 10:45. I encourage only healthy snacks. Some examples include: fruit, vegetables, pretzels, cheese sticks, yogurt, and crackers.
Homework Planners – Third graders will receive Homework Planners and the use of them is an important part of 3rd grade. Parents are asked to read the planners EVERY NIGHT. Homework will include AT LEAST 20 minutes of reading each night and a math worksheet most evenings, other times homework may ask students to play outside or talk with their family about what they learned. Homework is meant to support classroom learning, not be a point of frustration at home. When homework is assigned it is to be returned to school the next day in the homework folder.
Supplies – This is the first year we are asking students to bring in supplies. Please refer to supply sheet you received with the class assignments. The list has also been posted on the Stark Website. As we move throughout the year we may ask for donations of the following items: tissues, paper towels, hand sanitizer, Lysol wipes, pencils.
Birthdays – Birthdays are always fun to celebrate with friends. If your child would like to bring in juice boxes and/or cupcakes, please let me know a few days ahead of time. You can send them in with your child the morning of his/her birthday as the time of celebration varies depending on the day.
Dismissal – If your child’s mode of transportation changes, I need a letter stating the change, i.e. If Rebecca is going home with Paige I would need a letter from Rebecca’s parents telling me that information. If you forget to send a letter, please make sure you contact the office with any changes during the earlier part of the day. Otherwise, your child will be sent home their regular way.
Home-School Communication – The Home-School relationship is a priority in my classroom. You know your scholar best & together we can make this year successful. I have created a class website specifically for parents & students to know what is going on in our classroom. You can visit the site by going to www.mrssmithswebsite.com.
I will also be using the app Class Messenger. It’s a quick and convenient way to make sure you are in the know about what is happening in the classroom. It’s easy to download and sign up! You can also message other parents on the app if you want to set up a play date! The link to sign up is http://cmsngr.co/4CMC2ZPP27. You can also download Class Messenger from the app store on your iPhone or Android and use the code: VPU6EJ.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time throughout the year. I can be reached either by phone, 203 977 4583, Class Messenger app or via e-mail, firstname.lastname@example.org . I look forward to working with both you and your child.
Here’s to an awesome year!
